Early Years Foundation Stage 0-5 years

We follow the practice guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (0 to 5 years old) to support children’s learning, development and welfare.

We are guided by the principles, which are grouped, into four themes:

  1. A Unique Child – every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured.
  2. Positive Relationships – children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships.
  3. Enabling Environments – children learn and develop well in enabling environments, in which their experiences respond to their individual needs and there is a strong partnership betwen practitioners and parents and carers.
  4. Learning and Development – children develop and learn in different ways. The framework covers eductaion and care of all children in early year's provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities.

Children are observed against the following areas of Learning and Development, which informs planning, and assessment on each child’s individual development and needs.

Prime areas
Personal, social and emotional development.
Physical development
Communication and language

Specific areas
Literacy
Mathematics
Understanding the world
Expressive arts and design

Each area of development has early learning goals. We guide and encourage each child to progress towards these goals, which should be reached by the end of reception year. All children learn through play, gaining confidence and experience on a daily basis in all of these areas.

Observations and photographs of each child’s achievements are kept in an individual profile folder.  Parents are welcome to add to these folders to maintain the home to pre-school link. These are kept confidential but are available for parents and their children to access at any time.

Characteristics of Effective Learning
The Characteristics of Effective Learning are generic; they are about how every child learn and to support children's learning and development effectively, we need to pay attention to the uniqueness of every child.
